Virtually no help

I guess it’s not just me, I have been trying to get a quote out of
EMC/VMWARE for months now without any luck… Why can’t they just do
like most other companies and put their prices on their website. I
don’t want to talk to some sales weenie, I just want a price so I can
put together a semi realistic budget.

Then I see this EMC=SUX by a friend of mine.

So then on parallels, and their total lack of support, but you can
find all the pricing you’d ever need on their website, but request any
kind of support, it is non existent. I made several requests over
several months for help from parallels and not one was answered.

I guess I just want the right people to respond to my request…

Ernesto Follow Up

Well, with the exception of a few flooded (very minor) garages, and
a few hours of the street being flooded enough to kayak around the
neighborhood, and some pretty wicked winds in the morning, the impact
of Ernesto was very minor. We had a lot off rain ~11 inches in 3 days,
and wind gusts to 38MPH. That was pretty much the experience for the
area.

What I found interesting, was the reports I got from my family on
the West coast. We got calls from everyone, but no one called on
Friday, the reason… “Oh we wanted to give you time to get back home
after the Hurricane evacuations” They were all, surprised when I
laughed. Why did I laugh, because in a city of over 400,000 there were
between 30 and 100 evacuations, all were because of localized flooding,
and to the best of my knowledge none were mandatory.

Well in typical media hype hysteria, a Tropical Storm that was a
Hurricane for about 18 hours a week earlier, was still being reported
as a Hurricane a week later. After the 2005 tropical season, I’m
betting that so many stations invested heavily in some type of tropical
package, that they are making a big deal out of every tropical
disturbance no matter how minor. In my opinion, this is the worst thing
that could happen, creating artificial hype for something that is
really a non event. Once again the general public will begin to ignore
official warning statements, and not do what is needed when a threat
does truly exist.

For example, this week as Florence was developing in the Atlantic,
and the initial path was pointing to the mid-Atlantic region, the
teasers on the news was the potential impact of Florence on our area.
This was when the storm was at least 10 days out, five day track errors
were about 300NM, I guess all that mattered was that line pointing our
way. Then there was the simple fact that just about every model on the
planet said that Florence was going to turn to the North, and not make
U.S. landfall, but why let the facts get in the way of a good story.

Simple fact of the matter is if you want the facts go to the National Hurricane Center

Ernesto Induced Depression…

Ernesto Landfall

So as I sit, glancing at the news, and seeing the almost depressed
look on the reporters faces, as Tropical Storm Ernesto makes landfall,
but not as a Hurricane, only a lowly Tropical Storm with sub 70MPH
winds.

It’s kind of strange that they all rushed from Florida
to cover the landfall of a storm, that I think they secretly hoped
would regain Hurricane status. Then again it is almost humorous to
watch them try to make more out of it then it really is, a rain event.
The local stations have all initiated “Team Coverage” as the first band
approaches, yep it is windy and raining, and as you can see all the
cars have to drive with their wipers on, now back to you in the studio.

At my Sister in law lives in Nevada, where tonight they
were still calling it a Hurricane, I guess Hurricane has a higher hype
value then tropical storm.

I wonder if their insurance covers Post Non-Traumatic Stress Syndrome…

Heres a job I think I could handle, The Lundberg Survey

I pass at least 1 gas station everyday, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to tell me that gas prices have been dropping for the last 2 weeks, if you want to impress me, tell me what the gas price is going to be in 2 weeks from now. Predicting that isn’t that hard either, look at the gasoline futures on the nymex, and add between 50 cents to a buck depending on your market, and you’ll have a pretty good estimate of what your pump prices are going to be next month.

I guess I am just a bit annoyed at the lead news stories for every media outlet was this great discovery that gas prices have gone down in the last couple of week, like they always have (except for last year).

I think the only easier job, would be forecasting yesterdays weather..

Downtime

It seems like it has been a hellish 2 weeks, with both my hosting providers (bluehost and dreamhost) having sporadic outages, the outages with each provider were understandable, but not acceptable, downtime never is.
It seems like every time I turned around, the one I actually wanted to work on, or upload to was either down or having a problem. Now everything appears to be returning to normal, and instead of obsessing on a down server and hitting refresh waiting for it to come back up, I can maybe get some of the thing I was working on, working…

Don’t get me wrong, I think both bluehost and dreamhost are great services and I highly recommend them, I think my total downtime over the last year with both could be measured in minutes. The last few weeks of downtime has totaled hours, but I’m paying seven buck a month, so I’ll get over it…

Ned Is Back

Well, the last couple of months have been hectic, moving websites between hosting companies, and in the turmoil nedyouralwayswrong.com lost its home… Well the shuffle is over, and Ned is being reborn in kind of a different life.
Outside of my regular job I have 4 projects going on, all in various degrees of completion or re-write, plus a couple of others that only get touched either when the break or I lose my mind and break them. So I have Ned to test on, and break thins without messing up important stuff.
Some of the sarcasm will remain, as well as pointing the finger at the occasional moron.
